On the death of Tim Hetherington

Yesterday, Tim Hetherington was killed by apparent “indiscriminate shelling by Quaddafi Forces” in Misrata, Libya- a quote from his final tweet. It should also be noted that his friend and colleague, Chris Hondros, was also killed in the attack and many other journalists were wounded. The exact details, in better format, can be found on any major news site. I only write this out of respect and in response to the unexpected impact that Hetherington’s death has had on me. Hetherington is best known for the documentary he co-directed, Restrepo, which won the Grand Jury Prize at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival and was nominated for the 2011 Academy Awards for best documentary. I wanted to take a moment to express appreciation for the invaluable work Hetherington and his colleagues were doing in the currently and progressively war-torn country of Libya. It is only by the bravery of such people that any realistic concept or truth about what is happening in such circumstances can be known, and it is a tragedy if their work goes undiscovered in light of what has recently happened. Please take some time to get to know what both Hetherington and Hondros were communicating about U.S. presence and the ongoing turmoil in the east.
